Andy Paris

Andy Paris is a theatre maker, audio producer and teacher.

Andy Paris has made a career of developing new works for the stage and screen. He is a director, writer, deviser, performer, producer and teacher. THE LARAMIE CYCLE (EMMY nomination), GROSS INDECENCY: THE THREE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE, by Moises Kaufman, UNCOMMON SENSE, OR,, by Liz Duffy Adams, Lucie Tiberghien’s THE QUIET ROOM, Ripe Time’s INNOCENTS, directed by Rachel Dickstein, The Talking Band’s THE NECKLACE, Matthew Maguire’s PHAEDRE and Deb Margolin’s INDELIBLE FLESH. Other writing credits include THE LARAMIE PROJECT: 10 TEARS LATER, THE FANMAKER’S INQUISITION, and THE CORPORATE CARNIVAL. Other directing credits include: GOLDSTAR OHIO (Times Newspaper’s Theatre Tribute Award for Outstanding Direction); Faith Pilger’s THE STAGES OF BURNING; GOING PUBLIC; MOMENTUM; and THE AMERICAN FAMILY at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Andy has performed in countless other plays in New York, regionally, and in Europe. FILM/TV credits include THE LARAMIE PROJECT (HBO) and LAW & ORDER SVU (NBC). He has also been the recipient of two AUDIE Awards and a Voice Arts Award for his audiobook narrations. Andy is currently Assistant Professor of Devised Theatre at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

More and more theatre departments are incorporating devising into their training. This highly collaborative process allows students to generate their own work, giving them ownership of the final product. Theatre professors Andy Paris (North Carolina School of the Arts) and Emily K. Harrison (Hamilton College) discuss their process, how they engage students, and the benefits of allowing students agency in the creation of their own work.
