Jennifer Johnson

Co-Artistic Director, Double Edge Theatre

Jennifer Johnson (She/Her/Hers) has worked with Double Edge Theatre since 1993 as a student, apprentice, collaborator, and now as Co-Artistic Director. She is a lead actor, creator, writer, and training leader focused on actor training, text development, and dramaturgy. She loves the ocean, the forest, and also gravitates to dark places. Johnson incorporates her passions into dramaturgy and physical metaphors in her performance work. This coupling of her passions and her work also influences the intimate collaboration, training, and performance work she undertakes. Johnson believes that an artist must continuously evolve for their work to be transformative.

She was a co-creator and actor of Double Edge's Keter, the Crowning Song 1995-99, Relentless in the early 2000’s, and co-created and performed as Leonora in Leonora, la maga y la maestra, which premiered in March 2018 at Peak Performances at Montclair State University and recently returned there for a multi-camera video capture that is on air nationally on PBS until 2024. Johnson appeared in many Summer Spectacles at Double Edge, most notably as Lucy Stone in We The People, Athena in The Odyssey and as La Senora in Once a Blue Moon, and directed the oral history project in the Ashfield Town Spectacle. She portrays Leonora Carrington in Double Edge’s Fall Spectacle Leonora’s World. With DE she has toured throughout the United States and abroad.

Johnson was Co-Director of the Charlestown Working Theatre in Boston for 25 years. For her educational and cultural work at the CWT, she received citations from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the City of Boston, as well as the Elliott Norton Award for extraordinary contributions to Boston theatre. Johnson was born and raised in Charlestown, MA.
