A Day With Milo Rau

Join us for an afternoon with director Milo Rau featuring a book talk, a panel, and an excerpt screening.

Wednesday 7 February 2024

Join us for a day with the new director of the Vienna Festwochen and artist-in-residence at NTGent, Swiss theatre artist Milo Rau: a book talk, a panel, and an excerpt screening of The New Gospel. Milo Rau is regarded by many as the most significant politically engaged theatre director working today, following in the footsteps of Bertolt Brecht and Erwin Piscator. More about Milo Rau here...

Reclaiming the Future
Book Talk with Milo Rau

The future is bleak. What can we do, what must we do? In his new book, Milo Rau shows how we can combat the perceived mood of doom. Drawing on his experiences as a director and activist, Rau talks about how to reclaim the future. One thing is clear: the existing order must be disrupted, sustainably, persistently, again and again.
Moderated by Frank Hentschker.

Beyond the 2%: A Manifesto Raising The Bar for Womxn Composers

Panel with Vienna Festwochen Festival artistic director Milo Rau, Tania León, Du Yun, Marcia Sells/Met Opera NYC, Kristin Marting/PROTOTYPE and other representatives from New York art institutions. Moderated by Frank Hentschker.

About The Panel
Hosted by the Vienna Festwochen Festival and the Segal Center, this panel calls for action to address the devastating current state of representation when it comes to female composers on the contemporary classical stage, opera, concerts, musical spaces and festivals. Join us to create and sign a global manifesto* demanding immediate change and decolonization in a still deeply entrenched patriarchal field resisting to change. (More below.)

Excerpt Screenings + Talk with Milo Rau

Milo Rau shows and discusses excerpts of his „Global Realism“ projects like „Congo Tribunal“, „New Gospel“, „Antigone in the Amazon“ and „Orestes in Mosul." Rau asks: What would Jesus preach in the 21st century? Who would his disciples be? What would a political Antigone for the 21st century, together with indigenous people, activists and actors from Brazil and Europe look like? Can theatre be a real stage for a tribune about the brutal 20 year civil war in Congo? Can a Greek tragedy really help heal a burnt city like Mosul in Iraq? What can and does a theatre play leave behind--what impact can it have in the real world?
