Through gender play, object study, queer reflections, sense memory, and repetitious failure, Rezes offers exercises and techniques in performance expansion for all theatre artists and educators to employ in rehearsal, on stage, or in the classroom.
Nonbinary Acting Methods is a workshop led by Tufts University Theatre and Performance Ph.D. candidate Jo Michael Rezes (they/them), who works as an actor and transmedia artist in Greater Boston. This workshop offers a nonbinary approach to the creation of character for performers and educators of all ages—with special attention to professional development for early-career actors. Join Boston-area theatremakers as they explore these methods via Zoom and learn along with them from the comfort of your own space!
This workshop is sponsored in part by a grant from the City of Boston Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture and with support from the Education Department of Company One Theatre. This workshop, along with in-person programming at Tufts University and events with C1's Stage One In School program, is dedicated to actor training free from binary ways of thinking, doing, and experiencing theatrical labor in rehearsal and the classroom. Materials and exercises are under development for a forthcoming monograph: Fractals: Nonbinary Acting Methods.
Instructor Bio
Jo Michael Rezes (they/them) is a nonbinary theatremaker and educator in Greater Boston dedicated to new work which features transgender writers, actors, and designers. Acting credits: The Rocky Horror Show, and A Grimm Thing (Entropy Theatre); Nosferatu, The Vampyr, and The Gospel of Susan (Sparkhaven Theatre); The Inheritance (SpeakEasy Stage Co. — Regional Premiere). Directing: Trans [Plays] of Remembrance (HowlRound.TV) and Cloud 9 (AD, The Nora – Elliot Norton Award). Jo instructs gender, acting, and devised performance courses across the country (Yale Dramatic Association, UMass Law, Tufts University).
