LTC National Convening at Encuentro 2024 Participant FAQ
What is the difference between the Convening and the Festival?
The Encuentro 2024: A National Theatre Festival is a three week festival (24 October- 10 November, 2024) that features artistic exchange, cross-company co-creation, presented performances, all in repertory, for Los Angeles audiences. Encuentro 2024 will host fellow teatristas from across the country to present work, and share processes, challenges, aspirations, and goals. The 2024 Latinx Theatre Commons (LTC) National Convening is an event during the second week of the festival (30 October-3 November, 2024) requiring an RSVP and has a finite number of in-person participants. We expect to be able to accommodate 150 participants.
What is the goal of the 2024 Latinx Theatre Commons National Convening?
The goal of the 2024 Latinx Theatre Commons National Convening is to bring together theatre practitioners who are curious, generous, passionate, and interested in talking about the aesthetics of the work we will be seeing during the Encuentro and how it speaks to the field of Latine theatre. We will explore the different methods of creation, the geographical and political challenges companies and artists face, and how we engage our community, among other topics.
I love theatre! I don’t have that much experience talking about it. Is this the right event for me?
YES! We hope to bring together theatre practitioners with various levels of experience. On the first full day of our convening, we will talk through community agreements for our time together and provide framing for our conversations. We will also send all attendees resources ahead of time, if they would like to read about different ways of discussing theatre. We hope to create an environment that welcomes and encourages all voices and makes space for robust conversations.
Who can apply to attend the convening?
Any theatre artist, scholar, activist, educator, or administrator working in Latinx and/or Latin American theatre interested in fully participating in a four day intensive convening focused on aesthetics and cross-cultural collaboration should apply to attend.
Who can attend the Ecuentro festival?
Anyone! We welcome theatre artists, scholars, presenters, undergraduate and high school students, families, teachers, and audiences from around the country.
Where is it and what days?
The LTC National Convening will take place during the second week of the Encuentro: 30 October- 3 November, 2024 at the Latino Theater Company in Los Angeles, California.
When does registration for the 2024 LTC National Convening open?
The RSVP Interest Form for the 2024 LTC National Convening is open now and closes 19 August, 2024 @ 11:59pm PT.
How much does it cost to attend?
Attending the convening is free to all attendees, but you are responsible for your housing, travel, and food costs outside of provided meals. If you receive a participation spot, you will receive free tickets to six performances (with the option to buy more at a discount).
Is there any financial assistance available?
There will be a limited number of travel reimbursements to help cover these housing and travel costs. To be considered for these funds, indicate as such in your interest form. We cannot guarantee funding to all, but will do our best to make attending as accessible as we can and to notify you as to whether you are receiving a travel reimbursement as soon as possible. Your interest in a travel reimbursement does not affect your chances of receiving a spot at the National Convening. We encourage you to seek outside funding. If I submit an interest form, am I automatically given a slot?
No. You will be notified of your participation status by Friday, 6 September 2024. You will have until Friday, 13 September 2024 to accept your invitation or release your spot to a person on the waitlist.
Why are there so many questions on the Interest Form?
This form is our opportunity to get to know YOU! We are still in the planning stages of the sessions we will have during the convening and we want them to be informed by the people who will be in attendance - that’s you! We want this convening to be practitioner driven so we will be reviewing all responses and taking them into account as we build out our programming.
How does “selection” work for the convening participants?
We are seeking the most diverse group of conveners possible within our established parameters to ensure robust conversations. All interest forms will be reviewed after the deadline to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to be selected while taking a variety of parameters (region, gender identity, years in the field, previous participation at LTC events, etc) into consideration. From there, we will create a cohort of participants based on this self-identification to ensure a well-balanced convening.
Attendees are expected to participate in all convening events and enter the space as representatives of their multiple communities. 150 people is not our entire community, but it is our hope that these representatives can take what is learned back to their homes and continue the conversations started at the convening with generosity and a spirit of abundance.
