Theatre
Our mission is to create great American theater by developing and producing new works and world masterpieces that most richly direct our gaze to the life of the human spirit. We cultivate an audience that cherishes the intimate joy of theater, enriched when shared by a community of others.
Residency Activity
So far in this residency, Madeleine has collaborated with the staff at Two River Theater to host a series of playwright-led self-education retreats on topics as wide-ranging as the history of Greek tragedy and the works of contemporary master artist David Greenspan. She has also worked with members of the Two River Theater Emerging Writers Group on career development, led master classes for apprentices and community members on writing for the stage, and written program essays for nine Two River Theater productions. In 2017, her play Hurricane Diane, commissioned by Two River and specifically written for the community of Red Bank, New Jersey, had its world premiere at Two River, in concert with a series of educational events open to the public addressing the play's central concerns: climate change, Greek tragedy, queer desire, and sustainable gardening. Hurricane Diane went on to premiere off-Broadway in 2019 in a co-production with New York Theatre Workshop and WP Theater, reuniting almost the entire New Jersey cast and creative team, where it won Obie Awards for both playwriting and performance.
